This listing is for a beautiful mid-19th Century French needle work tea cozy embellished with bronze metallic wire embroidery. T he tea cozy has a dark ruby colored silk background with an elaborate design with center medallion on one side and a tassel design on the reverse. The interior is lined with a stripped fabric with stylized flowers that match the color of the outside fabric. There is metallic cording around edge. The use of metallic threads in the design is unusual as most 19th Century tea cozies were made with bead work. Measures 10″ high and 12 1/2″ wide. This nice tea cozy is in good Estate condition with the following issues from normal wear and age. The silk exterior body has expected wear from normal deterioration although there are no tears. The metallic threads are also worn and numerous threads are visible where the designs were stitched. The interior is clean and without noted flaws and the overall appearance of this lovely tea cozy is very attractive. Please view all photos as part of listing. Needle work items were common in the early Victorian Period with the more primitive items such as samplers and wool embroidery work being done as a popular pastime by young girls practicing their sewing skills. These treasured items were then added to their “hope” chests. The more elaborate pieces that included much of the more desirable hand work were the rage in Victorian England from about 1845 to 1855 and were made by women of wealthy backgrounds. As the Victorian Period advanced, less and less of these elaborate pieces were produced and the earlier examples are highly sought after by today’s collectors as each piece is a one-of-a-kind.
