Needle work items were common in the early Victorian Period with the more primitive items such as samplers and wool embroidery work being done as a popular pastime by young girls practicing their sewing skills. These treasured items were then added to their “hope” chests. The more elaborate pieces that included much of the more desirable hand work were the rage in Victorian England from about 1845 to 1855 and were made by women of wealthy backgrounds. As the Victorian Period advanced, less and less of these elaborate pieces were produced and the earlier examples are highly sought after by today’s collectors as each piece is a one-of-a-kind.
