A rare and beautiful hand-embroidered monstrance cover or veil, late 18th to early 19th century, and perhaps French, or German? There is a German late 18th century embroidery on paper in the Bavarian National Museum with the identical iconography, if you search: the Host on display surrounded by sun rays, an altar canopy above it, and lit candles in front. This embroidery uses many types of metallic and silk threads, and various stitches. While it is in very good condition, the thread has faded, and there are a few places where the background silk has worn through — the close-up photos show these areas. The gold work alas has lost much brightness, with the bottom edge showing the most wear. As far as I can tell it is the complete cover. It is sewn onto a green velvet backing, so I snipped the stitches holding it down along the lower right side, and it looks like the back side of the cover is the same ivory silk, but without embroidery. It is in an “open Frame, ” that is without glass. I’m open to offers. It is still very expensive to go out west.
