Exceptional antique Chinese or Japanese silk embroidery panel / piano shawl
Impressive in its making and its condition (for its age), made of silk and masterfully embroidered large panel measuring 56″ x 80″, not including the fringes at the bottom of the panel. Whether it’s a panel or a wall hanging or a bed cover, it is in remarkable shape for its age and has remained its deep, emerald-like color, without any fading on its front surface. An excellent, detailed embroidery, depicting a symbolic, large Phoenix-like bird and a set of flower arrangements, all meticulously and skillfully done and in great shape. Of course, as with most vintage and antique textiles, it’s not perfect and there are a few minor flaws I need to bring to your attention: there are very small holes in three (possibly 4 if I overlooked something) parts of the panel. The holes are tiny and you need to closely examine the panel to easily see those. The largest damage I see is a fraying spot in the center, that is around 1/4″ x 1/8″ in size. Not a hole, though. If you look at the images closely, you can see most of the imperfections. What you can’t see without closely scrutinizing it, should not even be considered flaws in a vintage/antique silk embroidery. In overall, this item is in remarkably good shape. The wrinkles you see in the images are there because I did not want to mess with it and try iron those wrinkles out. I feel that it is better to be left to someone with more expertise in ironing fine vintage silk, than I have. It’s been folded up for a quite some time. There is some fading and a few spots on its back, along the ages, as you can see in the last image, but it doesn’t show on its front surface. Even at quality antique shows I rarely see vintage or antique embroideries of this caliber, condition and size. Let alone the price tags on those. I try to do my best. And represent each item in the most honest and professional way I can. Still, I cant know everything about everything.
